The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Irish man has been shot dead in Namibia.

Former Kerry footballer Ray Prendiville, who was in his sixties had been working in the security business in the southern African country.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to the family of the former Garda who had moved to Namibia to work as a security operative.

It's understood Mr Prendiville was shot on Friday night although circumstances remain unclear at this point.

The Kerry man was a Munster championship medalwinner - scoring a goal against Tipperary in the 1975 provincial final.

Kerry GAA have passed on their sympathies to the family of the former player.

Namibian police are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting.
