There are twelve former Dáil deputies running as candidates in the local elections - with many hoping that gaining a seat in the local council would be a stepping stone to getting back into Leinster House in 2016.
Among them is former Fianna Fáil Dublin South East TD Chris Andrews.

Since losing his seat in the 2011 General Election - he's switched allegiances and is now running as a Sinn Féin candidate in the Pembroke - South Dock ward for Dublin City Council.
But he denies his move to Sinn Féin is a political stunt.
