The value of Irish food and drink exports abroad rose to almost €10 billion last year. That is up 9% on 2012 and 40% since 2009.

The record figures have been boosted by a significant increase in exports to China as well as key European markets.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney says the record figures highlight the growing role of the agri-food sector in Ireland's economic activity.

€9.99 billion worth of Irish food and drink was exported around the world last year.

Export values for dairy products and ingredients exceeded €3 billion for the first time with meat and livestock accounting for €3.3 billion and prepared foods €1.6 billion.

The surging figures were driven by increasing demand in some of Ireland's key markets. Exports to China are up by over 40% to €390 million - making it the sixth largest destination for Irish food and drink.

Exports to continental Europe were up 11% to €3.2 billion: with Germany, France and the Netherlands all recording double-digit growth.

Bord Bia says the outlook for 2014 remains positive with more strong demand expected in emerging economies and an added focus on growth in the Middle East, Russia and Asia.
