At least five vehicles have been involved in a major crash on the M6 in County Westmeath.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash at Junction 5 Kilbeggan.

Gardaí said the motorway will remain closed in both directions until further notice.

Motorists are advised to divert to the N52 via Mullingar and drive carefully after a heavy shower of hail stones on the road.
