Two bodies have been found in the wreckage of a fireworks warehouse in England after an explosion there 24 hours ago.

Specialist officers have been carrying out detailed searches at the scene in Stafford today.

A 53-year-old man who was being questioned in connection with the fire has been released.

Specialist police teams have been searching the site on an industrial estate after the fire at the SP Plastics unit in Stafford.

It took firefighters three hours to bring the blaze under control on Thursday night.

There was an explosion at the unit prior to the fire and an investigation is now under way to find out the cause.

Two men were taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, one in his 60s suffering from a back injury and another, in his 40s, with serious burns.

Two women, one in her 40s and the other in her 50s, were assessed for smoke inhalation but discharged at the scene, police said.

Superintendent Ian Coxhead said: "We have a great deal of sensitive and challenging work to complete in order to allow us to establish the cause of the explosion and the following fire."

A "significant volume of fireworks" was being stored on site, and the unit had been all but destroyed in the ensuing blaze, he added.

At the height of the blaze there were 50 firefighters at the scene, the fire service said.

Police said a cordon was in place to protect the public and residents in the Baswich area were urged to remain indoors with windows closed.

Eight fire engines were sent to the scene and dozens of firefighters were dealing with the blaze at the industrial unit.

Onlooker Mike Hillman said he was watching from Tixall Road, adding "massive fire, loads of smoke this way, hope everyone is OK".
