Fine Gael TD Liam Twomey has announced that he won't be standing at the next general election.

The Wexford deputy, who's also chairman of the Oireachtas Finance Committee, is citing family reasons.

Twomey thanked his family for their support, as well as Taoiseach Enda Kenny and party colleagues who have helped him throughout his career.

“It is with a heavy heart I announce that, for family reasons, I will not be standing at the next General Election," he said.

“It has been a huge honour to represent the people of Wexford throughout my political career and I thank them for their support. I will continue in my duties representing my constituents until the date of the election," he added.

Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe TD said:

“I am saddened today at the announcement by Liam Twomey TD, that he will not be contesting the next election.

“It was my pleasure to have had the opportunity to introduce him to the Party in 2004 and I have been delighted to work alongside him in Wexford ever since.

“He has been an outstanding representative for the people of Wexford and has undertaken stellar work in his roles as the Fine Gael spokesperson on Health and the Chair of the Finance Committee, where he worked tirelessly.
