The mother of a boy who went to school in England wearing a 'Fifty Shades of Grey' costume for World Book Day says she has no regrets.

Liam Scholes (11) wore a smart grey suit accessorized with cable ties and an eye-mask, inspired by the character Christian Grey from the erotic novels.

He was excluded after teachers at the school in Manchester ruled his costume was not suitable.

But his mum Nicola claims every child of 11 knows who Mr Grey is, and says it was just a bit of fun.

"The cable ties were tiny and not enough to do anything with them," she told the Manchester Evening News.

"We didn't think there would be a problem."

"I got a phone call home from the school saying the outfit was inappropriate and that he had been excluded from taking part or being in any of the photographs."

"If it was a primary school I could understand but it's a secondary school and the book and the film have been everywhere - it's one of the most famous books in recent years and it’s not like the pupils will be unaware of it."

Ms Scholes claimed one of the teachers arrived dressed as the homicidal serial killer Dexter Morgan from the Jeff Lindsay novel 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter.'

"I don't see why sex is seen as more offensive than murder," she said. "He went as a book character and it didn't say in the rules that the children had to have read the book."

"He's aware the book contains things of a sexual nature…but it was nothing sinister and no offence was intended; it was meant to be a laugh."

"The school wanted him to change his character to James Bond; ironically a very promiscuous character who kills people - so I don't know which is worse."

But a spokesperson from the campaign '50 Shades Is Abuse' supported the school's decision.

"WHY would anyone dress their child up as a guy who stalks, coerces, threatens and manipulates a woman??!!" the group tweeted.

"Me and the teacher agreed to disagree and it's not being taken any further, but I was disappointed for Liam that he'd been stopped from taking part and that he's had a dressing down," Ms Scholes added.

Children across the UK took part in World Book Day by going to school dressed as literary characters on Thursday.
