A Fianna Fail TD has said a referendum on abortion will be needed if the government expert group recommends legislative proposals.

The group is due to present a report on abortion to Health Minister James Reilly next month.

He will then bring it to the Cabinet.

It is expected to recommend either regulation or legislation.

Earlier this week Cardinal Sean Brady said that the Catholic Church plans to lobby TDs and Ministers on the issue in the coming weeks.

It is before the expert group makes a recommendation to the government next month on how best to legislate for the ‘X’ case.

14 years ago a Supreme Court judge ruled in that case known that a woman should have the right to access an abortion in Ireland if there is a ‘real and substantial risk to her life’.

Cardinal Brady said the Church believes a new referendum on abortion will have to be held regardless of the findings of the expert group.

While Robert Troy of Fianna Fail told Newstalk Breakfast that the country needs to have its say on what is an emotive issue.
