People who bought homes at Priory Hall in Dublin have accepted a government plan to write-off their debt. It has been reported that mortgages attached to the north Dublin apartments are to be written-off.

Former residents will also be given pre-approval to buy a new house. A Priory Hall Committee is meeting the Taoiseach to finalise the deal.

The solution was presented to residents on Monday. The apartment complex was evacuated nearly two years ago after it was deemed unsafe due to fire safety hazards.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has said he believes the proposals are 'a fair and reasonable outcome' and 'they will give Priory Hall owners an opportunity to get on with their lives'.

The Minister said the proposals will ensure that Priory Hall is refurbished into a 'desirable, high quality, safe location by Dublin City Council'.

Last month, Newstalk learned that the government was recommending that apartment owners should have the remainder of their mortgages wiped out and be allowed to hand back the keys to the banks.

Spokesperson for the residents is Graham Usher. He says he is hopeful the deal will be finalised.
