The army bomb disposal team says an explosive device found in south Dublin late last night was viable.
The gardaí called in the army after a suspect package was found on the road outside a home in Sallynoggin.
Neighbouring houses were evacuated and the area was cordoned off - but the scene was declared safe in the early hours of this morning.
The Defence Forces deployed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team after the device was found.
The EOD team arrived on scene at 11.45pm and made the device safe at the scene.
It was then removed to a secure military location for further examination, where it was confirmed as viable.
The scene was declared safe at 2.00am.
The bomb parts are being handed over to detectives to help with their investigation.
