Police say a device thrown at the Belfast home of the brother of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane was a “crude explosive device.”

Martin Finucane’s home was attacked shortly before 6:30 am this morning.

The explosive smashed the front window of the house, bouncing off and landing in the front garden. A vehicle was then heard making off from the scene.

Two people who were in the house at the time were unharmed.

Mr Finucane said he has been left shaken by the ordeal.

“My message to them is to stop and to cease and I hope that I am the last,” he said.

“But explain to me why you targeted me and the reasons for it – because there is no justification for it. There is no moral justification for it whatsoever.”

Army bomb experts were called to the scene in the west of the city. They have examined the object and declared it to be “the remnants of a crude explosive device that did not ignite.”

PSNI Detective Sergeant Keith Wilson said investigators have yet to establish a motive for the attack.

“We are extremely fortunate no one was injured in what was a reckless act in a built-up area,” he said.

“I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Glenties Drive around the time of the incident and who witnessed any unusual activity or vehicles to contact detectives in Musgrave Police Station.”
