Barnier says UK must offer "concrete plan" for Brexit extension

Michel Barnier has said EU leaders will need to hear a “concrete plan” from the UK in order to agree to any extension of the Brexit process.

At a press conference this afternoon, the chief EU negotiator said leaders will have to consider whether an extension will increase the chances of getting the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement approved by the UK Parliament.

He warned that agreeing to an extension without a clear plan would have economic and political costs for the EU – and leaders will have to consider whether the process would be likely to end up in the “same situation” a few months down the line.

Mr Barnier noted that the current withdrawal agreement was “the only treaty available” and remains the “only possible basis” for the UK to leave with a deal.

Sport Ireland seeking “urgent clarification” over Delaney loan to FAI

Sport Ireland has written to the FAI President seeking “urgent clarification” over a loan CEO John Delaney gave the organisation out of his own pocket in 2017.

The organisation – which is tasked with directing the development of Irish sport – said it had asked for information on the “circumstances of the loan and its repayment.”

It comes after the FAI chief executive confirmed he made a “once-off bridging loan” worth €100,000 to the association to help it with a “very short-term cash flow issue” in 2017.

He said it was the only time he gave the association a short-term loan and said it “repaid in full” in June 2017.

New Zealand PM will ‘never mention name’ of Christchurch attacker

New Zealand's prime minister has vowed not to give the man accused of shooting 50 people dead in a terror attack publicity.

30 people remain in hospital after the shootings at two mosques in Christchurch last Friday, with nine of them in a critical condition.

Those who died ranged in age from three to 77-years-old - with two children among the dead.

The gunman used a camera to broadcast 17 minutes of live video of the attack at the al Noor mosque.
