President Trump is making the trip as part of a European tour that will also see him travel to Paris for a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the armistice that brought the First World War to a close.

The White House says the Irish visit will "renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations."

Union expresses "grave concern" after Loughinisland journalists arrested in Belfast

Two journalists arrested over the suspected theft of confidential documents related to the Loughinisland murders have been released by police in Northern Ireland.

Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffrey were arrested in Belfast this morning.

Both men worked on a documentary raising serious questions about the police investigation into the 1994 loyalist terror attack in County Down.

This afternoon, the National Union of Journalists in the UK and Ireland expressed its “grave concern” at the arrests.

EU offers “unprecedented partnership” with the UK - but only after border agreement

The European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator has said that the bloc is ready to build an “unprecedented partnership” with the UK – but only if a legally operative backstop on the Irish border can be agreed.

Michel Barnier was speaking after his latest round of talks with UK Brexit Minister Dominic Raab in Brussels today.

Mr Barnier said the EU remains ready to build an ambitious new partnership on trade, cooperation, security, foreign policy and defence.

He again warned however that none of this will be possible unless a “detailed and legally operational backstop solution” on Ireland is included in the Withdrawal Agreement.

Plans to call time on daylight savings in the EU spark Brexit ‘time border’ fears

Plans to scrap daylight savings time in the EU could be set to pose a further headache in Brexit negotiations.

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker has recommended that the plans be put into action after a public consultation found that a majority of EU citizens were in favour.

The public has been open across the EU since May – with the majority of Irish people voting in favour abolishing the bi-annual clock change.

However, the proposal has prompted concern about the creation of a Brexit "time border" - with Belfast and Dublin running on different times.

Labour TD Alan Kelly calls for leadership change and 'radical shake-up' of party

Labour TD Alan Kelly has said there needs to be a 'radical shake-up' within the party.

He was addressing calls for Brendan Howlin to step down as party leader.

A number of Councillors have already called for a change at the top, while others have spoken out in support of the party leader.

However, Deputy Kelly - who hoped to challenge Deputy Howlin the 2016 leadership contest, but failed to secure a nomination - has become the highest-profile member of the party to weigh in.
