Holiday goers in Cannes will no longer be allowed to take large bags onto the beach, in a move aimed at preventing terror attacks.

The city's mayor says the new rule, which will remain in effect until the end of October, is designed to stop bags "that could contain explosives or weapons" and allows police "to intervene in a pragmatic way".

Violators could be fined or asked to leave the beach under the new measures.

Police in the UK have dropped an investigation into historical claims of sexual assault made against former Top Gear host Chris Evans.

According to The Telegraph, Evans will face no action over allegations made by a former colleague of a “non-recent sexual assault”, in which he was accused of grabbing her breasts in the early 1990s.

It is understood that the BBC presenter was questioned under caution today at a police station in east London by officers from the Metropolitan Police's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.

It is understood the board voted 10-7 in favour of investing in the site, which is to replace Hinkley Point B due to be decommissioned next decade.

However, the UK Government has said it will not make a final decision on whether to build a new nuclear power plant in Somerset until Autumn.
