The Government has appointed Supreme Court Judge Mary Laffoy as the chairperson of the Citizens' Assembly.

The assembly will comprise the chairperson plus 99 citizens randomly selected on the basis of being representative of the Irish electorate in terms of gender, age and regional spread.

The first item to be considered will be the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution.

The army has removed an historic artillery shell which was discovered in a residential area in County Kildare.

Gardaí requested help from the Army Bomb Disposal Team after a suspicious device was found at Blackmiller Hill this afternoon.

The man who tried to assassinate former US president Ronald Reagan is set to be freed from a psychiatric hospital after 35 years.

It comes after a federal judge ruled that John Hinckley Jr. was no longer a danger to himself or others.

Reagan was shot while leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel in the US capital in 1981.

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the shooting, which wounded the former US president in the chest.
