Maria Bailey deselected from Fine Gael election ticket

Fine Gael TD Maria Bailey has been removed from the party's election ticket following a meeting of the executive council this evening.

In a statement, Ms Bailey said she was "disappointed" with the decision to be deselected to contest the next general election in the Dún Laoghaire constituency.

Ms Bailey said she was informed at 5pm today in a letter from the Taoiseach that her deselection was being proposed.

Two people dead and others injured after school shooting near Los Angeles

Two people have died and several others have been injured after a school shooting in the US state of California.

The gunman has been arrested and is being treated in hospital after opening fire at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed that two teenagers were among the fatalities.

 

Man jailed for online harassment of six female writers and journalists

A man described as a “complete recluse” has been jailed for the online harassment of six female writers and journalists.

Brendan Doolin of Leighlin Road, Crumlin, Dublin was today handed a five year prison sentence with the final two years suspended.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard how Doolin insulted, abused and threatened the women online over a five-year period.

 

HSE publishes plan for addressing hospital overcrowding this winter

The HSE has published its plan for tackling the overcrowding crisis in hospitals around the country this winter.

It comes just days after the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) recorded 679 people waiting for beds in Irish hospitals – the highest number so far this year.

The HSE has been given an extra €26m to roll out its Winter Plan until the end of the year.

 

Danny Healy-Rae calls for drink-driving permits to reduce rural isolation

Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae has called for the government to introduce drink-driving permits for those living in rural areas.

The Independent TD made the suggestion in the Dáil today, saying the permits would help with rural isolation.

He said people living in rural Ireland are suffering from isolation and depression by not being able to go to the pub and have been "isolated in their homes like rabbits trapped in a burrow".
