Second man arrested over murder of Eddie Hutch
Gardaí have arrested two men in connection with the murder of Eddie Hutch in Dublin earlier this year.
Hutch, a brother of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch, was gunned down on Poplar Row in the North Strand area on February 8th - in apparent retaliation for the Regency Hotel shooting.
Two suspects in his death, aged in their 30s and later 20s, are being held at garda stations in the city.
Investigation launched after man (70s) dies in garda custody
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has confirmed it is investigating the death of a man in custody in Co Mayo earlier today.
The force’s oversight body said the deceased, who was in his 70s, became unwell with breathing difficulties after being detained at Westport garda station.
Emergency services were called and gardaí administered CPR, GSOC said, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sabina Higgins criticised for “offensive” abortion comments
The wife of President Michael D Higgins has come in for criticism over her comments on abortion.
Speaking in a debate at Trinity College, Sabina Higgins said it was an “outrage” against women that a person should be “made carry” a baby with a fatal foetal abnormality.
Pro-life activists condemned her speech today, with the Life Institute calling it “an absolute abuse of power and privilege”.

A Carlow woman is part of a BBC team which has reportedly been expelled from North Korea for what's been described as "disrespectful reporting".
35-year-old Maria Byrne from Tullow is a senior producer with BBC's Asia Team based in Beijing.
Maria, along with journalist Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, and cameraman Matthew Goddard, were arrested on Friday as they were about to leave the secretive state, according to the broadcaster.
LGBT bullying is the "great unspoken" issue in Irish schools
Teachers and principals have been urged to take greater action to prevent homophobic bullying after a new survey showed young people want more attention to be focused on the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.
The second annual Student Attitudes Index from the Studyclix.ie website found that 39% of Irish secondary school students agree LGBT students need to be better protected in schools.
Declan Meehan of ShoutOut, a voluntary group that runs anti-bullying workshops in schools nationwide, said homophobic and transphobic abuse remains a problem despite changing attitudes to LGBT issues.
