Simon Harris apologises to the Dáil over children’s hospital information

The Health Minister Simon Harris has formally apologised for failing to provide the Dáil with the full information regarding the cost overruns at the National Children’s hospital.

Minister Harris issued the formal apology to the House this afternoon, insisting it “would never be my intention to mislead Dáil Éireann."

He said a government inquiry into the spiralling costs will report back next month and insisted “we will not be found wanting when it comes to acting against any entity or any company if errors were made.”

Opposition parties were quick to criticise Minister Harris over the apology - with Sinn Féin labelling it "very feeble."

HSE to do 'everything it can' to restore normal services after nurses' strike suspended

The HSE has said it will do everything it can to restore normal service following the suspension of this week's nurses' strike.

Yesterday, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) suspended three days of planned strikes.

It came after the Labour Court issued recommendations in a bid to resolve the dispute.

The INMO said the proposals make progress 'across all areas of concern' - including to address staffing, recruitment and retention problems.

Mexican drug lord "El Chapo" found guilty on all counts in US trial

Mexican drug Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán has been found guilty on all counts in his drug trafficking trial in the US.

The 61-year-old has yet to be sentenced, however prosecutors expect him to serve the rest of his life behind bars at a high security US prison.

Guzmán was arrested in January 2016 after escaping a Mexican prison in late 2015. It was the second time he had escaped from prison in the Central American country.

He was extradited to the US where he underwent an 11-week trial in Brooklyn

Gardaí investigating second fire at Co Leitrim hotel earmarked for asylum seekers

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has expressed 'grave concern' over a fire in the Shannon Key West Hotel in Rooskey, Co Leitrim on Monday night.

It is the second fire at the hotel, which has been earmarked for asylum seeker accommodation, in just over a month.

It followed  another incident on January 10th.

Gardaí were called to the hotel on Monday at around 9:45pm.

Theresa May Says She Needs More Time For Brexit Talks

Theresa May has asked MPs for more time for Brexit talks with the EU.

She was speaking as she updated the House of Commons in the wake of her latest efforts to secure changes to the backstop from Brussels.

EU leaders last week repeatedly insisted that the withdrawal agreement is not open for renegotiation.

Today, she said the government needs some more time for further talks with EU.
