Fitzgerald appears to back plan for Ireland to police borders on behalf of the UK

Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has appeared to back a plan by Britain for Irish authorities to police our ports of entry on behalf of the UK.

It comes after Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire suggested that air and sea ports would also act as a border frontier for the UK - and eliminate the need for a hard border between the Republic and the North.

Mr Brokenshire said in an interview in today's Guardian that he wanted to strengthen the combined UK and Ireland border.

Three men jailed for life over fatal beating of elderly man with baseball bat

Three young men have been jailed for life for the murder of Thomas Dooley who was beaten to death in 2014 at his home in Edenderry, Co. Offaly.

The 64-year-old's family said they were horrified by the cruel and heartless way he was killed.

Neighbours found Thomas slumped on an armchair in the living room of his home on February 16th, 2014 – four days after he died.

Man who raped his son nine times is jailed for 14 years

A man who raped his son nine times at their family home in Waterford has been jailed for 14 years.

The 66-year-old, who cannot be named to protect his son's identity, was also sentenced today for locking him in a wooden cage-like box.

Judge Robert Eager said it was hard to imagine the effects these appalling acts of sexual abuse have had on the boy, who is now 14.

Top US Republican says he will no longer defend or appear with Donald Trump

Donald Trump's presidential campaign is on the brink after the most senior Republican in the House of Representatives became the latest name to say he will not campaign for him.

During a conference call with members of his party, Paul Ryan said he could no longer "defend" Mr Trump.

Mr Ryan, who as House speaker is the leading officer in the lower chamber of the US federal legislature, added that his priority was now to make sure that his party keeps control of Congress.

Families 'devastated' after two Cork men die in Canada crash

The family of two Cork man killed in a car crash in Canada have said they are devastated by their deaths.

Cathal Murphy, from Bandon, and Raymond McCann, from Kanturk, are believed to have died after their car overturned over the weekend. 

Canadian media reports said the pair were found in a vehicle near Melita, in Manitoba, on Saturday morning.
