An investigation is underway into a fatal house fire in Galway which claimed the life of an elderly man.

It happened in Lower Camus, Rosmuc in Connemara at just after 11:30pm last night.

Two units of Clifden fire brigade rushed to the scene and spent three hours bringing the blaze under control.

A man (73) who was in the house at the time died in the fire.

A routine examination of the scene will be carried out by gardaí this morning.
