Notorious fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman suffered injuries to his leg and face as he narrowly escaped capture by security forces, according to the Mexican authorities.

The head of the Sinaloa drug cartel was hurt as he fled from pursuers in the northwest of the country.

Guzman, whose nickname means "Shorty," left the authorities red-faced after he broke out of his prison cell in a maximum security jail in July through a mile long tunnel.

Efforts to recapture him have been continuing ever since.

The Mexican government said it had worked with international agencies in its efforts to apprehend Guzman.

It said in a statement: "As a result of these actions, and to avoid his capture, in recent days, the fugitive engaged in a hasty retreat, which, according to the information received, caused him injuries to one leg and the face.

"It's important to clarify that these injuries were not a product of a direct clash."

Meanwhile, US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson has said he was confident the drug kingpin would be caught, during a visit to Mexico City.

Mr Johnson said: "With regard to El Chapo, our government, the US government has pledged its support to the Mexican government in the search for him.

"We continue to pledge that support and I am confident he will be found. I believe he will be found."

Guzman had previously evaded capture for years in the rugged mountains of Sinaloa state after he escaped from another maximum security prison in 2001.
