A 17-year-old boy who went viral after smashing an egg on a politicians head is to escape prosecution.

William Connolly was dubbed “Egg Boy” after he cracked the egg on to Senator Fraser Anning’s head during a March 16th press conference.

Senator Anning had been widely condemned for blaming the Christchurch terror attacks on Muslim immigration.

This morning, Victoria State Police confirmed that Mr Connolly would be issued with an “official caution” but would not be charged.

The 69-year-old senator, who responded by slapping the teenager, has also escaped charge.

“A decision has been made not to charge the 69-year-old man,” police said.

“On assessment of all the circumstances, the 69-year-old’s actions were treated as self-defence and there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.”

A 20-year-old man, who was interviewed in relation to claims the teen was “kicked a number of times” is to be charged with assault by kicking.

Egg Boy

A crowd-funding page that was set up for ‘EggBoi’ following the incident has now raised more than AU$80,000 (€50,700) for “legal fees” and “more eggs.”

Mr Connolly said he would donate the money to the victims of the Christchurch attacks.

Censure

Last week, Senator Anning was formally censured by the Australian Senate for the comments.

A bid to have him suspended failed as he made the comments outside the chamber.

Shortly after the March 15th attack, Senator Anning tweeted: “Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?”

He also claimed that it is “clichéd nonsense” to suggest that mass shooting’s are caused by gun laws or those who hold nationalist views, insisting: “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”

The comments drew fury from Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and from leaders around the world.
