Edinburgh Airport in Scotland is being reopened after an investigation determined that a suspect package found by a security x-ray machine posed no threat.

A bomb disposal team was called to the airport following the discovery of the package at 1.50pm today. Police were also questioning a passenger in the wake of the bomb scare.

Around 100 travellers were evacuated from the airport terminal to a nearby multi-storey car park. Others who had already passed through security remain in the departures area.

Authorities gave the all-clear at the airport around 5pm following an investigation into the suspect package.

"I'm glad to say that they (the police) have concluded there is no threat" said the chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, Gordon Dewar.

"The challenge now will be once they hand back the airport to us, we have to get it up to normal operation again".

Many inbound flights have been diverted to Glasgow Airport, while a number of outbound flights were cancelled.

Among the inbound flights to be diverted are services arriving from Berlin, Munich, London, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Flights due to depart this afternoon for Brussels, Birmingham, London and Stornoway have been cancelled.

Chief Inspector David Campbell from Police Scotland's Border Policing Command said "As part of a routine bag search at the airport, suspicions were raised about the contents of one item of hand luggage and the decision was taken to evacuate the airport while the appropriate enquiries could be carried out".

"We are now satisfied there isn't, nor was there ever, any risk to the public and the airport will now begin to reopen" he added.
