Dublin City Council is to close off residential roads in the capital so that children can play safely on them.

The 'play orders' are part of a pilot scheme and has been designed along the lines of another successful project in Bristol in the UK.

Under the scheme, streets will be closed for short periods of time once every month or two.

A giant water slide was brought in as part of street closures in Bristol.

Bristol's famously steep Park Street was cleared of traffic and turned into a giant water slide made of hay bales and tarpaulin.

Residents were able to hurtle down the historic road - a seven per cent slope - on inflatable lilos on tarpaulin sheet lubricated with soapy water.

A petition to bring a similar water slide to Dublin is gathering momentum at the Slide 'n' Fly page on Facebook.

Meanwhile, children on Clancarthy Road in Donnycarney will be the first to benefit from the play order scheme under which their road will close to play.

Councillor Deirdre Heney (FF), who brought the idea to the local authority, says "The idea of these ‘play orders’ is to give city neighbourhoods a couple of hours every month or two to get out of their homes, meet their neighbours and allow their children to play on the street without safety concerns. The street, or a portion of it, would be closed to traffic for a couple of hours, creating a safe environment that would bring together the local community."

Those who back the idea say it will go some way to answering concerns about young people becoming increasingly addicted to technology as a form of entertainment.

The community will also benefit through people will get out and get to know their neighbours.

Last week, council officials conducted a site visit of the trial location at Clancarthy Road.

Heney will be running for election in the Dublin Bay North area.
