A Dublin man accused of taking part in a brawl inside a city pub has been refused bail because gardai believe he is a "flight risk".

Frederick Thompson from Loreto Road, Maryland was extradited from The Netherlands last month to face a charge of violent disorder.

Following his arrest in Amsterdam, he was brought back to Ireland a fortnight ago on foot of a European arrest warrant.

Upon his return, he was charged with violent disorder in relation to a brawl at Morrissey's Pub on Cork Street in the city of January last year.

A bottle was allegedly thrown during the fight and it is claimed a number of people were assaulted.

Thompson (33) applied to the High Court for bail today and gardai objected on a number of grounds.

Due to the seriousness of the alleged offence and the likely sentence upon conviction, they are concerned he will not show up for his trial.

Garda Seamus O'Donovan told the court he has no properties here and represents a genuine flight risk.

The accused told the court he has no income of his own and has been relying on his parents, and two claims worth €20,000, for the past few years.

He said his parents were willing to hand over up to €10,000 to secure his bail - but his application was refused.

He is due back in court to enter a plea later this month.
