Business owners in Dublin city centre are welcoming new by-laws to regulate busking.

Under the measures, which are expected to come into effect within weeks, street performers will require a permit.

A busking permit will cost €30 - but those who use amplifiers will have to pay an additional €60 a year.

A noise limit of 80 decibels will be enforced and buskers will have to finish up by 11pm.

Dublin city councillors voted in favour of new laws last night.

Richard Guiney of the Dublin Town business group says the noise limit must be enforced.

But one city councillor wants an all-out ban on busking with amplifiers.

Mannix Flynn says the noise levels are unbearable for residents and workers in the city centre.

And he says the 80 decibel limit will be too difficult to enforce.

One of Grafton Street's most popular acts - Keywest - released a video on Sunday saying busking in Dublin may be in jeopardy with the new regulations. They argue that amplifiers are vital in order for bands and performers to be heard:
