More than 90% of fines issued by Dublin City Council for breaking rules on election posters remain unpaid.

The local authority has refused to name those responsible, but says almost 300 fines were issued.

31 fines have been paid - while most of the rest are being appealed, according to The Herald.

The fine for breaching the rules governing removal of election posters is €150 per poster.

The Department of the Environment says "All election/referendum posters must be removed within 7 days after polling day."

Some 30 of the fines have been paid, but nearly €40,000 is still owed to the Council.

It is believed that 48 reminders have been issued about the outstanding fines, while two are being paid in installments.

The Herald reports that the remaining 212 fines are being appealed by the politicians involved.
