The DSPCA is appealing to puppy traders and people transporting dogs and puppies to Britain - reminding them of the legislation and paperwork involved.

The DSPCA have taken in nine puppies - five of which were part of the seizure at Rosslare Port last week.

They are assisting the Wexford SPCA and say that the animals, following a short period of foster care, will be available for adoption.

"These puppies were seized because the owners did not have the correct paperwork or vaccinations to allow them be transported from the Republic of Ireland into the UK", the DSPCA says.

It is reminding people that there is legislation in place governing the movement of puppies and dogs, both of people's own dogs and those involved in commercial trade.

"The key requirements are that all puppies and dogs much be accompanied by their EU Pet Passport and have been properly vaccinated and microchipped" it adds.

Speaking on behalf of the DSPCA, CEO Brian Gillen says: "People seem to still be unaware of the rules surrounding the export and travel regulations for dogs and puppies".

"Please make sure you are familiar with and obey the rules or the DSPCA and other authorised officers have the right to seize and prosecute owners".

"If you are a person transporting puppies or dogs for sale in the UK or Europe there are even more rules for you including animal welfare regulations and required certificated certificate issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine within 48 hours of scheduled departure time".

The body says it is expecting to see a significant increase in the number of puppies exported by puppy farmers and puppy traders from the Republic to the UK as we approach the Christmas period.
