Dry January has begun today as people across Ireland are swapping alcohol for “healthier lifestyles” this New Year.

One in two Irish people will be taking part in the tradition this month, according to a survey commissioned by beer brand Lucky Saint.

They found that those aged between 18-24 were most inclined to take part in Dry January.

Women were also found to be more likely to drop alcohol this month than men.

Saving money and improving mental health were cited as two of the biggest motivators behind doing Dry January.

Over 1,000 people participated in the survey which was conducted nationwide by Bounce Insights.

Of those surveyed, one in two said they were planning on drinking less alcohol throughout the coming year.

Changing habits

Lucky Saint’s Head of Communications Kevin Lyster said alcohol consumption habits are clearly changing in Ireland.

“I think attitudes and acceptance to not drinking have shifted and I think people understand that choosing to be alcohol-free can be a great option for someone,” he said.

“There’s great alcohol-free options out there, be it beer, wine, or cocktails which is helping with a shift away from alcohol,” he said.

“Having those options is really important to help people feel included in a social setting If they are seeking to live healthier lifestyles.”

Non-alcoholic beer sales in Ireland have tripled since 2017.

Sales have increased 25% since 2022 alone.
