The AA says wind-blown debris is likely to be a problem, particularly on minor and secondary routes.

Gardai are reporting extremely strong cross winds on a number of motorways and exposed areas, including the M7 in County Laois between the Borris in Ossory and Portlaoise East Junctions.

And in County Leitrim the local road between Carrick on Shannon and Strokestown is blocked at Kilmore due to a fallen tree.

Homes are left without power

2,000 homes around the country are without power this morning because of the stormy weather and strong winds overnight.

ESB Network crews are working to restore electricity to homes - mainly in the Cork and Kerry area.

A number of homes were without power in Oughterard in Co Galway - but it has now been restored.
