A five-year-old girl has died in Britain after her head became stuck in a lift at a house in Weymouth, Dorset.

Dorset Police were called to an address in Emmadale Close at 11.58am to reports that a child's head was trapped.

Police officers, paramedics and firefighters attended but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family has been informed and the coroner has been notified.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said an investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The street has been closed while emergency services and scenes of crime investigators work at the scene.

The police spokesman said: "Police officers, paramedics and firefighters attended but sadly a five-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Her family have been informed and the coroner notified.

"Emmadale Close has been closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and for scenes of crime investigators to carry out an examination.

"An investigation... has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the death."

An ambulance service spokesman said the girl had suffered a head injury.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to free her.
