Thames Valley Police officials received a bizarre call last Thursday, as Leighton, a pet dog, unwittingly called 999 from a house phone.

Leighton, a two year-old Belgian Malinois from Buckinghamshire, has a habit of making off with phones, and this time went as far as to call the emergency services from his back garden.

His owner, Mary Amos-Cole, had attempted to retrieve the phone after Leighton ran off with it, but was unaware that the emergency call had been made.

The police, who described the call as nothing but 'heavy breathing,' arrived at the door of Ms Amos-Cole to enquire about the call.

She quickly gathered from the officer's description what had happened. Thankfully, the police responded in good humour, "He's a very naughty dog but luckily we all took it as a bit of a joke."

Leighton is known to the local police, having set off the house's burglar alarm multiple times previous to this incident.
