Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed the planned release dates for two major planned sequels.

The companies say the final episode of the ongoing Star Wars trilogy will be released on May 24th 2019 - less than 18 months after The Last Jedi's release this coming December.

Episode IX will be directed by Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow.

The Last Jedi had previously been announced for summer release before being moved to a lucrative December slot.

While a similar move is possible this time around, it is likely Disney wants to keep 'Holiday 2019' reserved for another of its own big hitters - Frozen 2.

Episode IX's predecessor The Force Awakens was the first major film in the series to not premiere in May (assuming you discount the infamous Holiday Special, which everyone does).

Meanwhile, a release date has also been announced for another iconic franchise sequel - Indiana Jones 5.

Both director Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford are set to return for the film, which will be released on July 10th 2020.

The planned release date will come only a few days before Ford's 78th birthday.
