Figures have been released for the first time giving a breakdown of expenses claimed by individual Irish judges.

The figures for 2012 show there were 146 judges and expenses claims totaling €1.67m.

Not all judges made claims, while others received arrears from previous years. However when the figures are broken down, on average each judge recouped nearly €11,500.

A total of just under €60,000 was spent on incidentals and judicial attire, such as wigs and gowns. However the bulk of costs relate to travel and subsistence for judges on circuit or attending conferences.

The highest claim from a Supreme Court judge was for more than €4,000 and was made by Mr Justice Frank Clarke,

Mr Justice Paul Gilligan tops the High Court list at over €8,000 while District Court judge Seamus Hughes claimed over €42,000.

The Courts Service says the 2012 figures show a 30% reduction on judicial costs since 2008.
