Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz will seemingly pay the price for the huge email leak which has seen tensions rise in the party ahead of their national convention.

The documents, released by Wikileaks, show attempts to undermine the Sanders campaign, including a mail from the Chief Financial Officer of the Democratic National Committee, Brad Marshall, in which he suggested getting someone to ask about Sander's religious beliefs as "I think I read he is an atheist."

Speaking on CNN, Sanders stated that the content of the emails reinforced a view that he had expressed many times throughout the primary campaign:

"I think it's outrageous but it's not a great shock to me.

"As I said, it's what we talked about six months ago, it's no question to my mind that the DNC was supporting Hillary Clinton.

"That is why many many months ago, I made it clear that I thought Debbie Wasserman Schultz should resign, should step down, not only because of the prejudice shown during the campaign, but because I think we need a new leadership of the Democratic Party which is going to open up that party to working people, to young people."

Wasserman Schultz's appearances at the convention, which starts on Monday, have all been canceled, while her position as chairwoman is also under scrutiny.

Representative Marcia Fudge of Ohio was named as the permanent chair of the Democratic National Convention, who will now be the chair throughout the convention process, performing many of the public functions that would have been done by Wasserman Shultz.

According to CNN, the move comes, in part, as a step to help ensure that there are no further tensions between him and the rest of the party, as he has been "furious at Wasserman Schultz for what he believed was favoritism to Clinton."

Sanders supporters have already been putting pressure on her to resign, and calling for her dismissal.

With Sanders still bringing considerable support to the convention and pushing for change to the structures of the party and the primary process, the Vermont senator still has a significant say in proceedings as they look to put forward a united front over the coming days.
