The mother of murdered boy Daniel Pelka took her own life in her cell, an inquest has heard.

Magdelena Luczak (29) was found dead at Foston Hall in Derbyshire on Tuesday.

She was two years into her 30-year sentence for the murder of Daniel (4), who weighed just 1st 9lbs when he died in March 2012.

An inquest into Luczak's death was opened and adjourned at Derbyshire Coroner's Court on Friday.

Luczak and her partner Mariusz Krezolek, both from Poland, were convicted of murder and sentenced to at least 30 years in jail in August 2013.

They both blamed each other for the head injury which led to Daniel's death and insisted he suffered from an eating disorder.

The boy was the victim of what was described in court as an "incomprehensible cycle of cruelty and violence" which left him looking like "a concentration camp victim".

During their trial, the court was told Daniel was imprisoned in a room with the door handles removed, was fed salt when he asked for a drink, deprived of food and forced to defecate in his own bed.

He was so hungry he would steal food from other children, who subsequently had to lock their food away.

Staff said he picked up muddy and dirty pancakes from the floor, ate out of bins and even tried to eat beans which had been planted in soil as part of a school experiment.

In December, the UK Court of Appeal dismissed a bid by Krezolek to appeal against his murder conviction.
