Tomorrow's scheduled vote for Taoiseach will go ahead after all.

Talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have hit a roadblock after a planned meeting tonight was cancelled and no further negotiations are scheduled.

Independents are being told by Fianna Fáil tonight that tomorrow is their last chance to vote for Micheál Martin as Taoiseach.

It had been expected that the vote would be cancelled to allow further talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.

But Enda Kenny has told his TDs tonight that he does not have Fianna Fáil's support to delay it.

The news has led to speculation that Fianna Fáil has secured the support of some independents ahead of tomorrow's vote.

Earlier this evening, it emerged that the Acting Tánaiste and senior Labour party TDs met with Fine Gael last night.

Joan Burton, Alan Kelly and Brendan Howlin were briefed on Government formation by Enda Kenny and Michael Noonan.

It's unclear if the meeting was an attempt to persuade Labour to reconsider participation in government or to get the seven Labour TDs to vote for Enda Kenny for Taoiseach.

And while progress has been made it's understood they are nowhere near agreement on something Independent TDs could sign up to and back either Enda Kenny or Micheál Martin in a vote tomorrow afternoon.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has issued a statement saying the party would put forward a motion to postpone the vote if the result was going to be inconclusive saying the Dáil time should be spent dealing with matters such as housing, health, water and strikes.

Independent TDs are adamant that there must be a clear agreement between the two parties on a minority Government if they are to show their hand and declare for either leader as Taoiseach.
