A video showing an altercation between a Dublin Bus driver and a cyclist has emerged on YouTube.

The footage was recorded on the cyclists helmet camera, with the cyclist claiming the bus driver cut into the cycle lane in front of him, nearly making contact with his bike.

The cyclist confronts the driver at the traffic lights a which point the bus driver says "I’ll run you over. Do you wanna die?"

"Just go in front of me, I’ll run you over, no problem.”

The cyclist, Liam Phelan, warned the driver, "When I give the video to the guards you can chat to them about the rules of the road."

Phelan captioned his video, explaining: "I'm not ashamed to admit I was a bit shaken after this encounter.

For me, the thought that this man is a professional driver who probably encounters cyclists every day, is a scary thought."

Dublin Bus have confirmed that they are investigating the matter and have released this statement.

Dublin Bus drivers undergo an extensive training programme where they are trained to the highest standard. Each driver undergoes an annual module of the Certificate for Professional Competence Programme (CPC) and refresher training every two years. In addition to this further driver training is provided as required. Dublin Bus uses the most advanced driver training techniques and has a Vigil Vanguard system in place which provides practical on the road training with individual driver feedback.

All training undertaken by Dublin Bus includes a strong emphasis on cyclist safety, and in particular how drivers should at all times be aware of cyclists moving in and around their vehicles. This includes the importance of maintaining proper road position to afford adequate space to cyclists and raising awareness around the checking of blind spots where cyclists might suddenly appear.

Dublin Bus has today received a complaint about an incident involving a cyclist which occurred last Thursday May 28th and this complaint is being investigated fully. All incidents or accidents are investigated fully and if any breaches are found, appropriate action is taken internally.
