A crucifix has been installed in the new meeting chamber of Kerry County Council.
Today marks the opening of the facility following renovations costing €250,000.
The idea for the crucifix was proposed at an April meeting, however concerns were also expressed at the time that such a move might not be possible because of equality legislation.
A motion on the crucifix was brought by Fianna Fáil Cllr. John Joe Culloty, who has said he doesn’t want to force Catholicism on others but he says he does want to express it.
Six out of nine councillors who were present for the vote were in favour of the move, though council management advised against it.
