Croke Park holds a special place in my heart as both a Dublin man and an Irish man.

As a Dub, I was brought up with the Alive-Alive-O sweeping down off Hill 16. In more recent times, perfidious Albion’s round ball game has influenced the denizens of the Hill and we get this:

It makes its point so let’s not knock it.

On the first and third Sundays in September the country comes to a standstill as amateur sport triumphs over any professional variety. If we are really lucky we get to see a piece of real history. Henry’s 10th was such an achievement!

Speaking of historic days, who could forget 2007 and the tears of a Bull?

Throughout the lead-up, we wondered how the anthems would go down. We got the answer – goose-pimples a-go-go.

There were also tales of what might have been, usually involving those pesky French.

There were lucky escapes too. We could have had this for FIVE days last year:

Ed Sheeran has everything that any Irish troubadour should have.

Red hair – check.

Acoustic guitar – check.

Fits in on the Late Late – check.

A relatively Irish-sounding surname – check.

The thing is Ed, in Croke Park will be as dramatic as watching paint dry. Lovely guy but is this what cutting edge music should be?

Ah well, at least there won’t be any noise issues...
