Sex offender Anthony Lyons made a €200,000 settlement with the woman he violently attacked on a Dublin street, the Court of Criminal Appeal has heard.

Lyons (53) from Griffith Avenue is due to find out later this month whether his sentence for the sexual assault will be increased.

The businessman, who owned an aircraft leasing company, was given a six years sentence with five and a half years suspended for a violent sexual assault on a woman (27) as she walked down a Dublin street in the early hours of October 3rd 2010.

He was also ordered to pay €75,000 compensation to his victim by Judge Desmond Hogan following his conviction at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 2012.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) claims the sentence is unduly lenient in that it does not match the gravity of the offence nor does it reflect its effect on the victim and society.

Today as part of the DPP challenge, the Court of Criminal Appeal was told that Anthony Lyons had settled civil proceedings with his victim for just under €200,000 including costs.

The woman did not want this information to go public - but presiding judge Mr. Justice John L. Murray said the information had to be tendered in open court.

He indicated the Court of Criminal Appeal will make a ruling on the DPP challenge later this month.

At an earlier hearing, Patrick Gageby SC for Mr. Lyons, submitted that his client was a man of previous good character who has suffered an 'enormous loss of reputation' as he is now notorious and will never be forgotten.
