A horse trainer and producer who was paralysed after she was allegedly trampled on by an out of a control horse at a showjumping event is giving evidence in the High Court.

Deirdre Bourns of Lisbeg Farms, Eyrecourt in Co Galway is suing the Showjumping Association of Ireland, Cavan Equestrian Centre, its owner, and horse rider Hayley Dunne of Old Graigue, Maynooth in Co Kildare

Ms Bourns claims she was knocked from behind by an out of control four year old horse called Ms Red at a showjumping event in September 2012.

She has told the High Court she was warming up one of her horses before the event when she felt a very sudden impact.

She gave evidence her next memory is of being comforted on the side of the practice ring and realising she was not able to move her legs.

Ms Bourns (59), who is now in a wheelchair, said her most awful recollection was arriving at the Mater Hospital in Dublin and seeing the words 'Spinal Unit' on the door.

She is suing for damages of over €1.5m - alleging numerous safety deficiencies on the day of the event.

The claims are being denied.
