The cigarettes were discovered yesterday evening during a search under Operation Tara.

Gardaí estimate the cigarettes will result in a €7.5 million loss to the Exchequer.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Counterfeit cigarettes are illegally produced and sold by a person or group other than the original trademark owner.

They are typically produced to avoid paying higher production costs and duty.

Counterfeit cigarettes regularly contain substances such as pesticides, arsenic, dead insects, mental splinters and vermin faeces.

The counterfeit cigarettes have been taken for analysis by Revenue Customs.

Operation Tara is an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at local, national and international levels.
