It has been announced that temporary accommodation for the families that survived the fire is to be provided at a DunLaoghaire Rathdown Council owned car park, beside Ballyogan Works Depot.

The council says the site has its own private acces road, which is also in council ownership.

Talks with residents of Rockville Drive, where it was initially planned to put the families, failed to reach agreement and they would have had nowhere to live from this weekend.

A spokesman says the site is not ideal, as it has no access to basic services, but staff are committed to working around the clock to make it ready for occupation by the weekend.

Residents of Rockville Drive in Carrickmines who had previously been in talks over objections to a temporary halting site on their road, have this evening issued a statement saying they welcome the news of the Ballyogan site.

Their statement also said they hoped the survivors of this awful tragedy can be provided with safe accommodation at this location and be given the space and support they need to grieve.

“We hope that the council can now move quickly to provide the survivors of this awful tragedy with safe accommodation at this location and that the survivors can be given the space and support they need to grieve," the statement said.

The group said they "hope that the events of the last week will prompt a considered debate about traveller accommodation across the country.

"Clearly there are serious inadequacies in the standard of accommodation provided. We would welcome the opportunity to contribute constructively to that debate at an appropriate time in the future," they added.

The removal of five of the victims of the fire takes place this evening.
