The European Broadcasting Union today announced that it is considering moving this year’s Eurovision contest final from Vienna to Dublin.
An EBU spokesperson told Newstalk the event, which takes place on May 23rd, could be hosted in Ireland for two reasons:
“Ireland is Eurovision in many people’s eyes,” Gunther Parzer said before adding that names like Dana, Johnny Logan and Linda Martin show how much Ireland has given to Eurovision culture.
In what could be seen as a controversial move the EBU spokesperson then pointed to the fact that the day of the final will coincide with the counting of votes in the same-sex marriage referendum. Mr Parzer said the May 22nd vote was historic and the EBU wanted to share Ireland’s decision with the world.
Commenting on the proposal, Panti Bliss said she was delighted with the decision and was hopeful the contest would round off a momentous week.
The performer and gay rights activist is emphatic that the event would not take away from people going to the polls the night before the final.
“We can celebrate an historic day by tuning into the Eurovision... what better way to mark it!” she said.
The No campaign was unavailable for comment but it is expected that they will release a statement in the near future.
