There have been 59 more coronavirus-related deaths in the Republic.

Today's figures from the Department of Health show the total number of deaths here has reached 1,159.

A further 229 new cases have been confirmed today, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 19,877.

Data released this evening shows a total of 153,054 coronavirus tests have now been carried out here.

Over the past week, 41,470 tests were carried out - 5,335 were positive, meaning a positivity rate of 12.9%,

The current coronavirus restrictions are due to continue through this weekend, having previously been extended until May 5th.

However, Cabinet ministers were today told there is no indication that coronavirus disease levels are low enough to start easing restrictions.

The Cabinet will meet again on Friday, with ministers expected to be asked to sign-off on an extension of the lockdown period and potentially to slightly ease some of the restrictions.

The National Public Health Emergency Team also met today to consider the situation, and say they will take a "phased, risk-based, public health approach" when it comes to any decision on easing restrictions.

They're due to make a formal recommendation to Health Minister Simon Harris by the end of the week.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "I think we have to try to stay the course in as much as possible.

"It's been very challenging for people - we know that. Patience obviously wears thing with these measures... these are challenging things for individuals.

"I have seen some reports suggesting we're in some way holding people responsible, or there's some suggestion of blame being attached to the public. As far as we're concerned we've seen a huge level of compliance and positive work from the public.

"It's just important to keep that up - it's brought us as far as we've gotten."
