It brings the total in the Republic of Ireland to 4,604.

15 of the deaths happened in the east of the country, one in the south, and one in the west.

The patients included 4 females and 13 males, while 13 were reported as having had underlying health conditions.

The median age of today’s reported deaths is 77.

Meanwhile, data shows 1,118 (28%) of the cases confirmed as of midnight on Thursday were hospitalised - with 158 cases admitted to ICU.

1,084 cases (27%) of the total cases were related to healthcare workers.

Today's figures come after the Government today announced new measures to support nursing homes amid a rising number of coronavirus clusters in nursing homes.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, said: “This week, the National Public Health Emergency Team made a range of recommendations to support the response in nursing homes and long-term residential facilities to COVID-19.

"This remains a priority for our focused attention and we will continue to monitor the rate of infection within these environments and support the sector through this outbreak."

Earlier, the latest figures from Northern Ireland showed a further eight patients had died after contracting coronavirus - bringing the total number of deaths there to 56.

The number of deaths on the island of Ireland now stands at 193.

998 people have tested positive in the North, with 94 new cases confirmed today.
