An eight year old girl from Cork is to receive €198,000 in a settlement with the HSE over an eye injury she allegedly suffered at birth during a forceps delivery.

Princess Ibeh of Elm Park, Wilton, was born at Saint Finbarr's Hospital in Cork on the 18th October 2006. She was delivered by forceps.

The High Court heard her right eye was allegedly injured when the forceps went over it during the procedure which was carried out by a junior doctor.

Through her mother she sued the HSE for damages claiming medical negligence left her with a scar and blurred vision.

Liability was denied but the case settled today for €198,000.

Judge Kevin Cross heard the prognosis is good for the eight year old who will soon be able to dispense with her glasses but her impairment means certain future careers are ruled out like being a pilot, a guard or a professional tennis player.
