There is confusion for brides and hotel venues following the move to level five on Wednesday.

Under the Government's level five restrictions, up to 25 guests can attend a wedding ceremony and reception.

While guests can travel outside their county to attend a wedding.

However some couples due to get married have been contacted by hotels and been told they cannot allow guests from outside the county.

One hotel in the midlands says they have been told weddings up to 25 people can still go ahead as long as guests are from the same county - which they say does not make much sense from a practical stand point.

The hotel claims the wording is "misleading to both couples and venues and makes for confusion".

"We can only open for non-social and non-tourist guests, but weddings can still go ahead at 25, as long as guests are from the same county that we are in," it adds.

CEO at WeddingDates.ie Ciara Crossan says the information given by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on Monday was clear.

"I suppose it was really on kind of compassionate grounds that a lot of people have had to postpone their wedding once, even twice.

"And he said given the amount of weddings that are due to take place between now and the end of the year, the fact that it's only 25 guests for each wedding he did kind of concede that it was reasonable that those weddings could go ahead and those people could travel".

'We need a Plan C'

Orla is from Kildare, living in Mayo and is due to get married in Dublin.

She has already moved her wedding from next week to the end of November as she was hopeful restrictions were easing.

But she says hotels will not accommodate those from other counties.

"Now the 28th, we can have 25 people but the hotel is unfortunately saying to us that because their guidelines are being told [sic] is that we can't travel - because half of us are coming from Mayo and the other half are coming from Kildare.

"So that's really where we're at - we can still have 25 people, but no hotel is really going to accommodate us if that doesn't change".

"I think even when it came in a couple of weeks ago - a friend of mine was getting married - and as long as they were there before lockdown on the Wednesday two weeks ago, it was OK, the wedding was able to go ahead.

"But now it just seems there is so much confusion - hotels, unless it's within your county you can't come and use the venue.

"So that's really where we're at."

Orla said she has spoken to other hotels who are waiting for clarity on the issue.

"They are happy to have us come at our 25, but they just need to know can we travel from county to county, is that exempt or not".

"I suppose we need to have a 'plan C' really - if all comes to all, we do want to get married this year.

"It might be a back garden wedding at this stage, we don't know.

"But we're hopeful that at this stage that they should look at weddings as an exception".
