Do you remember when you were a child and got a scraped knee?  Just when it was healing and the crust was just about to fall off? You decide to give it a helping hand and rip it off? What happens? You re-open the cut and the whole cycle begins again.

That’s how I’m feeling today. It’s been five years. The anger had subsided and I was looking ahead. Milk had been spilt but the crying was over.

The appearance of the Anglo Tapes has had this affect on Ireland. We were beginning to move on. Yes, we are in a big hole but we have just discovered a few ladders that may help us out of it. Anglo was a boil that may have faded with the help of a rebate from the ECB or the easing of our repayment terms.

Credit where credit’s due, the Indo did the state some service. It has rekindled the anger and that anger should be used to ensure we get to the bottom of what happened. With all the hype, the paper should be congratulated for not releasing tapes that might have prejudiced any trials. Yes, I would have loved to have heard what Seanie was saying but I would much rather see him answer to the law. The Indo know this too.

Court cases may be the way ahead. We will hear what happened. Yes, there is a danger cases may collapse but that is the risk of democracy. Something the bankers thought they could play hard and fast with. We will find out most of what happened there.

This brings us to the question of a political enquiry. I really do not know. We have seen Enda at his worst this week. His cheap political point scoring lets certain folk of the hook. A political enquiry may help Fianna Fail too. Their dirty linen will be well and truly out in public. They will have no choice but to re-form and reform themselves rather than go down a squeaky clean Micky M PR drive. He is an able man and could be Taoiseach but only after we get answers.

I thought I’d be more angry writing this but I’m not. Am I being too optimistic thinking we can finally be moving on? Time will tell.
